gilles poizat

Gilles Poizat, born in Lyon in 1967, began his musical journey studying classical trumpet before exploring improvised, experimental, and popular music. He lived in Conakry from 1993 to 1994, where he studied kora and Mandingo music with M'Bady Kouyaté's family, played in Kéba Bobo Cissoko's group, and formed Tamalalou with Ba Cissoko. Upon returning to France, he joined the Philharmonique de la Roquette, Etienne Roche's Grotorkèstre, and the experimental brass band Compagnie Musicabrass. In 2001, he co-founded Mazalda, performing for 17 years in the street and on stage, and collaborating with raï singers Cheb Lakhdar and Sofiane Saidi. Simultaneously, he created his own original songs and performed solo, and worked with Catherine Hershey on setting her grandfather’s poems to music. In 2018, he helped create the vocal sextet StimmLippe and participated in Clément Edouard's immersive show Seuil. He embraced the modular synthesizer, releasing his first album Champignon flamme in 2021, followed by trouvé perdu in 2024. He also composes for dance with Kopfkino and ALS, collaborates with Pollyanna and Arlt, and since 2020, has sung and played flugelhorn with Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp.
